A Perfect Model

Time for reminiscence this week as I met up with my artist friend, Dale. It’s been some years since we joined forces to produce a couple of pieces like this. The intention was to create posters combining Dale’s art and my words. Perhaps one day, we’ll do more.

A portait by Dale Webster, showing the face of a Kenyan woman looking directly at you, as described in the poem, which is on the right-hand side of the portrait.

Dale specialises in painting portraits, many of them, like this study, showing the people he met during his years in Kenya, but also — in his own words — “others who have helped shape my understanding of the world, the writers, artists, poets, philosophers, activists and music makers who have become a part of my life”.

Dale’s an extraordinarily prolific artist. You’ll find many more of his wonderful character studies through faces at his website, dalewebster.carbonmade.com. (A personal recommendation from me: check out the series entitled ‘Maasai Drought And Lamu‘.)
